Adam Driver unexpectedly saved the day on Ben Affleck’s son’s birthday by swooping in with some seriously impressive Star Wars gifts. Affleck and Driver are set to appear together in the upcoming Ridley Scott historical drama-thriller, The Last Duel. But for now, Affleck is promoting his upcoming sports-drama film The Way Back, directed by Gavin O’Connor. Leading up to The Way Back’s March 6th release, Affleck has spoken at length about his career and personal life. The Way Back marks Affleck’s first film since 2017’s Justice League, and his 2018 trip to rehab for his alcohol addiction.
While Affleck’s struggles with alcohol addiction were part of the reason he exited Warner Bros’ upcoming The Batman film, his newfound sobriety has opened a number of new doors for the star. After throwing his support behind Robert Pattinson, who has been selected to become the iconic superhero in The Batman, Affleck has shut down any possibility of him reprising the role of Batman after his three-film stint that included Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. Now in a new interview, Affleck recalls a recent instance in which someone else helped him become a superhero in his son’s eyes.
In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Affleck spoke about his son Sam’s birthday in late February. While filming The Last Duel, Affleck asked Driver to record a video for the young Kylo Ren fan. Instead, Driver went the extra mile by contacting Affleck’s assistant to find out his address and sent Sam some surprise Star Wars themed gifts for the big day. Amongst other gifts, Driver sent a signed card and picture of Kylo Ren that were given to Sam in addition to the video Driver made with Affleck.
Talking to Kimmel, Affleck explained, “Adam made me a hero to my kid and I will never, ever, ever forget it.” He said the move taught him “a really good lesson in doing those small gestures of kindness, because you have no idea.” Though The Way Back actor may already be a hero in the eyes of many fans, particularly those who are sad to hear Affleck won’t return as Batman, it surely means more on a personal level to be able to be seen as such in the eyes of his son. Stories like these are always fun to hear and learn a little bit more about what celebrities like Affleck and Driver are like in their day-to-day lives.
Moving forward, despite leaving his role as Bruce Wayne behind, Affleck has a number of new films scheduled for release in 2020, including the aforementioned The Way Back as well as The Last Duel with his old friend Matt Damon and his new hero, Star Wars’ Driver.
