New character posters for this year’s animated version of The Addams Family are hip with today’s memes. Cartoonist Charles Addams first created the iconic characters Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday and Pugsley Addams, as well as Uncle Fester and Grandmama, Lurch, Cousin Itt and Thing, in a satirical one-panel comic strip in The New Yorker magazine starting way back in 1938. But of course, most of America was introduced to the humorously macabre brood in the original Addams Family television sitcom, which premiered on ABC in 1964 and ran until 1966.

Despite its relatively short three-year run as a series, The Addams Family made enough impact on the culture to be revived many times over the years, including three times on series television. In 1991, as Hollywood ramped up its mining of old TV properties in search of movie ideas, The Addams Family arrived in theaters with a brilliant cast that included Raul Julia as Gomez, Anjelica Huston as Morticia, Christina Ricci as Wednesday and Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester. Two movie sequels would follow: 1993’s Addams Family Values and 1998’s mostly re-cast Addams Family Reunion. This year, MGM will bring back Morticia, Gomez and the rest of the gang in a computer animated iteration featuring the voice talents of Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Bette Midler and Elsie Fisher.

As The Addams Family gets set to once again grace movie screens with their special brand of dark-tinged, slightly twisted but still family-friendly comedy, a new batch of character posters has been released depicting Morticia, Gomez and the rest of the brood (via Bloody Disgusting). And just in case anyone was worried about The Addams Family’s brand of comedy being relevant in 2019, the posters assuage those fears by dropping some meme-worthy taglines. See the posters in the space below:

This particular collection of posters is clearly trying to bridge the gap between old and new, by featuring the classic-looking designs of the animated characters tagged with such now-familiar phrases as “Oh…snap” and “It’s gonna be lit.” Of all the meme-worthy taglines, “Rolling into Wednesday like…” is arguably the most natural and works the best (and Wednesday Addams is probably still the most relatable of all Addams Family characters). The posters also offer up hashtags for each of the characters, because of course social media is hugely important when it comes to marketing a movie today.

Overall, the posters do an adequate job of conveying the notion that this new take on The Addams Family won’t stray too far from the sitcom and the ’90s movies in terms of the characters’ looks and the general tone of gently dark comedy, but will still offer updated - and perhaps even hip - humor for younger people who may not be familiar with the earlier versions.
