The After movie full trailer is released, teasing the romance of college students Tessa Young (Josephine Langford) and Hardin Scott (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin). The story of After originally started off as a work of fanfiction about One Direction member Harry Styles published by Anna Todd on the website Wattpad. However, when the fic garnered millions of views, Simon & Schuster signed Todd to a publishing deal, altered the story to change the identity of the male lead from Styles to the fictional Hardin Scott and published it as the book After. The book series has continued with four followups: three direct sequels and one prequel titled Before that explores Hardin’s life before he met Tessa.
The dedicated fan following of the After books propelled Aviron Pictures to adapt Todd’s story for the big screen - like E.L. James’ Fifty Shades of Grey (which was originally written as Twilight fanfiction before being published as its own separate book series). The first After teaser trailer and poster debuted last fall ahead of the film’s spring 2019 release date. Now on Valentine’s Day, Aviron Pictures unveils the full trailer for this new romance film.
The full After trailer can be viewed below. The story follows young and naive Tessa, who arrives at college and runs across bad boy Hardin, quickly feeling a connection with him. However, things are complicated by Hardin’s past, his relationship with his family and his friends - not to mention that Tessa arrives at school with a boyfriend, her high school sweetheart Noah (Dylan Arnold). Watch the After trailer and check out the poser below.
In addition to Langford, Fiennes-Tiffin and Arnold, After stars Shane Paul McGhie as Tessa’s friend Landon, Khadijha Red Thunder as Tessa’s roommate Steph, Samuel Larsen as Hardin’s friend Zed, Inanna Sarkis as mean girl Molly and Pia Mia as Steph’s love interest Tristan. Further, Peter Gallagher and Jennifer Beals play Hardin’s father and step-mother, Ken and Karen Scott, respectively, while Selma Blair portrays Tessa’s mother Carol Young. After was directed by Jenny Gage from a script by Susan McMartin.
The trailer features quite a few moments and lines of dialogue pulled directly from the pages of Todd’s book, which will no doubt please fans of this property. However, there’s also some changes that have been made to source material in the adaptation process, like casting Mia as Tristan (who in the books was a male character). As the release date for After draws closer, perhaps more differences - and similarities - will come to light as Aviron Pictures continues to promote the movie. Whether fans will enjoy the differences remains to be seen, but they’ll no doubt be pleased by the aspects of the film that stick close to the story and book. No matter what, fans and casual moviegoers alike will get the chance to see After for themselves when it hits theaters this spring.
