Since they were officially introduced during season 2, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been dealing with Inhumans and how their presence on Earth affects the human population that the organization is meant to protect. Though the Inhumans were largely kept hidden from the public, that all changed at the end of season 2 when Terrigen crystals were distributed throughout the world in the form of fish oil pills. Season 3 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has seen the team dealing with the unpredictable emergence of Inhumans while Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) has been campaigning to create a S.H.I.E.L.D. team made up of powered individuals.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is now preparing to return from its midseason break and resume many of its third season story threads, including the tracking down of recently transformed Inhumans. A new clip from the midseason premiere episode, ‘Bouncing Back’, introduces one such Inhuman.
Yahoo! released the clip (below) from ‘Bouncing Back’ that introduces Elena Rodriguez (Natalia Cordova-Buckley), an adaptation of the Marvel Comics character Yo Yo Rodriguez a.k.a. Slingshot from the Secret Warriors series. As her name suggests, Slingshot is able to move at super speeds and snap back to her original position. In terms of the character on the show, Elena has been described as “a street-wise Colombian woman given Inhuman abilities.”
In addition to the clip, Clark Gregg spoke to Yahoo! about the team featured in the scene, as well as S.H.I.E.L.D. and Coulson’s handling of Inhumans in the second half of season 3:
The Secret Warriors were confirmed to be a part of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 prior to its premiere, but the development of the team was slow going since many within the organization disagreed with Daisy’s efforts in the first part of the season. But an early incarnation of the team - featuring Daisy along with her fellow Inhumans Lincoln (Luke Mitchell) and Joey (Juan Pablo Raba) - made their debut in the midseason finale.
“That strike team [along with Daisy] are constantly out [looking for Inhumans]. They have to neutralize, contain, or put down [these people] because they’re an evil Inhuman or someone that they seek to make a Secret Warrior. … There’s definitely an us versus them dynamic that gets going in the back half of this season. Part of [Coulson’s] job is about containing and neutralizing Inhumans. I don’t think he sees Inhumanity as inherently evil, but it put him in a funky position with Daisy and the other Inhumans.”
It’s unclear if Slingshot will join Daisy’s Secret Warriors since her first introduction in the clip pits her against Mack (Henry Simmons), though she is a member of the team in the comics. Additionally, Inhumans won’t be the only focus of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. when the show returns, with Hydra rebuilding thanks to Gideon Malick (Powers Boothe) and a reanimated Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) acting as host for the Marvel Comics villain Hive. Plus, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be setting the stage for Marvel Studios’ next release, Captain America: Civil War, so the show will be dealing with a number of story threads in addition to Inhumans.
