Chloe Bennet, star of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has revealed that season 6 will begin production sometime this coming week. After months of speculation, ABC finally announced that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had been renewed for season 6 in May.
The showrunners had been uncertain whether or not the series would be renewed, deliberately creating an ending to season 5 that they felt could potentially serve as a series finale. In the end, though, ABC decided in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s favor, renewing the show for a truncated 13-episode season 6. In another unexpected twist, the network announced that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. wouldn’t actually return until summer 2019, after the theatrical release of next year’s Avengers 4, even though the two wouldn’t necessarily be connected.
It seems Marvel is still choosing to push ahead with production. In a (now-removed) message on her Instagram (via MCUExchange) Chloe Bennet revealed that filming begins this week. She posted an image of herself in bed, with the message, “Last Friday before we begin shooting season 6. Daisy Johnson I’m coming for ya.”
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t normally begin production so early on, even for its usual fall release date, so this is unexpected news. Making it all the stranger is the fact Bennet has deleted the message from her Instagram account, perhaps suggesting viewers weren’t supposed to be aware of this. It may indicate something has changed in terms of Marvel and ABC’s long-term plans for the show, but it’s really too soon to speculate. There’s no Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con - which makes sense if season 6 is actually beginning production this week - so, barring a question in a fan Q&A, it’s unlikely there’ll be further news this week.
These are unusually busy times for Marvel Television, who have a number of shows in production right now. At SDCC, Marvel will focus on Iron Fist season 2, although there are rumors viewers can also expect news of the eagerly-anticipated Daredevil season 3. Meanwhile, Runaways season 2 recently began production, and the future also looks bright for Cloak & Dagger, with the first season proving to be a success. In addition, Marvel TV is believed to be working on a number of ideas for the Disney streaming service, which is expected to launch sometime next year. It’s possible New Warriors will ultimately become one of those shows; Marvel pulled it from Freeform in November last year, and there’s since been no news about the series’s future.
