The first image from Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD season 7 has arrived. When it started in 2013, Agents of SHIELD’s plot was meant to overlap directly with whatever was happening in the MCU’s movies at the time. That plan didn’t work out, though, and the show had completely deviated from the films by the time season 6 aired this year (shortly after Avengers: Endgame opened in theaters). Season 7 will only continue in that direction, bringing both the series and the entire pre-Phase 4 era of Marvel Television to a conclusion with it.

Agents of SHIELD season 6 concluded with its main heroes (sans Leo Fitz) escaping back in time right before the Chronicom hunters destroyed the Lighthouse base. They thereafter found themselves in early 1930s New York City (as evidenced by the Empire State Building being still under construction), only for Jemma Simmons to throw them for another loop by introducing an LMD/Chronicom version of their beloved late leader, Phil Coulson. As a result, the first-look photo for season 7 shows Coulson and his crew dressed appropriately for the ’30s.

Marvel.com dropped the first image from Agents of SHIELD season 7 online, teasing Coulson and his team’s efforts to blend into history, even as they find themselves being hunted by time-traveling Chronicoms using tech of their own to “assimilate on Earth with the aid of existing human faces”. You can check out the photo below.

The plot for season 7 is mostly under-wraps right now, but the teaser trailer unveiled at D23 this summer confirmed Hydra will come back into play at some point. Agents of SHIELD has already developed the organization in a way the MCU movies never have, and it’s speculated season 7 will take things even further by revealing Coulson’s team were responsible for creating Hydra to begin with. Showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen have also indicated the final season will function as a love letter to the show and its history, much in the same way Endgame did for the MCU on the film side. Failing that, season 7 still has the potential to be a collection of engaging time-travel adventure with the series’ intrepid heroes, in the vein of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.

Agents of SHIELD is kind of miraculous in the way it’s avoided becoming repetitive and continuously re-invented itself every season (and, sometimes, even within a season). By the sound of things, that will only remain the case in season 7, allowing the show to end things on (truly) its own terms. Fortunately, season 7 finished shooting earlier this year, so it won’t be impacted by Kevin Feige having taken creative control of both the MCU movies and Marvel TV, either. For a show many people saw as disposable and doubted would last past a season early on, it’s proven to be exceptionally sturdy.
